When the sleek-looking Polestar 3 launches in late 2023, it will not only be the brand’s first SUV, but also the first vehicle to feature Google’s new HD map. Polestar made the announcement today at CES 2023 and gave a few other details about the new features.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Google and Polestar have been collaborating for a while, and the tech company’s new HD map is the team’s latest product. The 2024 Polestar will mark the debut of Google’s HD map, which will also be featured on the Volvo EX90, scheduled for release in early 2024. Since Google’s Android Automotive operating system has been adopted by other automakers like Ford and GM—we expect the map to proliferate eventually as well.
The HD map is said to provide more detail and is more precise than traditional maps. This contributes to arguably the most notable function. Working with Polestar 3’s driver assistance technology, Google software can improve the EV’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving mode by better recognizing lane markings, real-world objects and road markings. Teamwork is expected to play a large role in future autonomous driving as well.
Talking to Polestar 2
The Polestar 2 was the first vehicle to have Google’s operating system called Android Automotive OS. While the in-car voice assistant feature continues, the system now adds “remote actions” that allow people to control vehicle functions via devices with Google Assistant.
Talking to your Google Assistant now allows people to remotely operate their Polestar 2 and check its status. For example, you can now pre-prepare the car’s cabin, unlock the doors, check the battery charge status, and more while lying in your seat.
Polestar says this new functionality will initially only be available in the US, but will eventually be available in other markets as well.
