North East software development firm Sapere Software teamed up with AV Dawson, owner and operator of Port of Middlesbrough, to develop a way to manage complex strategic projects.

Stockton-based Sapere competed with other software companies in the region to partner with AV Dawson, who was looking for a solution to efficiently manage their strategic projects in real time. Progress was difficult.

Neil Warren, Head of IT at AV Dawson, said: “We needed a bespoke solution that would allow the business to manage our strategic KPIs, as well as gain visibility into performance through the use of interactive dashboards and reports. Sapere’s solution definitely delivered.”

The work was initially funded by the UK Community Regeneration Fund through the Tees Valley Business Challenge, presented by local innovation and design experts Edge Innovation on behalf of the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority.

An initial £5,000 grant gave Sapere the opportunity to develop the concept and conduct feasibility studies, followed by £45,000 funding to make the prototype a reality.

Paul Drake, Sapere’s commercial director, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have won the competition to provide a technology solution for the Port of Middlesbrough. It was a great project and we are delighted to be able to design and develop software that meets their needs.

“There is a huge opportunity for businesses to use digital technology to create a competitive advantage and become more efficient and more profitable. It was great to be part of a project that showcased the software’s capabilities for complex, industry-specific challenges.

“Now that we have the software built, we will work with AV Dawson to implement and further develop it across the business.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Sapere is a great local business helping to put our ever-growing digital industry on the map. I am delighted that our funding has been a driving force for this project and made it a reality from the start.

“This is another example of firms in our region collaborating for mutual benefit, with this move from AV Dawson showing that you don’t need to look outside Teesside, Darlington or Hartlepool to get top quality talent.”
