A British teenager drowned while swimming with his friends on an English beach in Portugal.
Two 19-year-old friends had a hard time diving on a small beach on the Costa da Caparica coastline south of Lisbon.
The tragedy occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Dragao Vermelho beach, which is English for Red Dragon beach.
Emergency responders received a warning just before 6:30 p.m. local time and contacted police, coast guard and firefighters and mobilized a Portuguese Air Force plane.
Two of the three, thought to be British, managed to escape when help arrived, and a search was initiated for the third, whose body was found on neighboring Tarquinio-Paraiso Beach.
The Portuguese National Maritime Organization (AMN) confirmed that the victim was from the UK.
The beach where the unnamed teenager was stranded is just over an hour south of Calada Beach, north of Lisbon, where 45-year-old British financial advisor Trevor Selling drowned while trying to save his two daughters in June last year. flow.
“A 19-year-old young man of British nationality died on the beach of Dragão Vermelho on the coast of Caparica, in the municipality of Almada, on January 4, while he was bathing with two friends,” AMN said in a statement on the latest tragedy.
He said the alarm was received at 6:20 p.m. via the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center and the Lisbon Marine Police, along with the coast guard, paramedics and a Portuguese Air Force aircraft, were dispatched as part of an emergency response.
The organization added the following in its long statement: “When the Marine Police arrived at the scene, they found that 2 of the 3 people who were reported to have difficulty in water reached the shore by their own means and were assisted by health professionals to the scene.
“A search was immediately launched for the third person, the 19-year-old man, who was later found dead on the adjacent Tarquinio-Paraiso Beach by volunteer firefighters.
“Determined dead by the doctor at the scene.”
An autopsy is believed to have been done, but the results are not expected to be released.
Mr Pelling was trying to help his two daughters, aged 12 and nine, when he drowned last June.
They were then taken to the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon for a medical examination, and a psychologist was provided to assist the grieving teenagers and their mothers.
