If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that comfort is key. From leggings as casual wear to the meteoric rise of hooded blankets, it’s clear that perspective has changed on the fashion front, and now it’s time for accessories. Enter: padded shoes.

Now listen to me. Admittedly, this is a little weird, but the ‘comfortable’ shoe trends are nothing new. Both Crocs and Uggs have seen a notable rebound, with Birkenstock’s Boston slippers topping Lyst’s top 10 items in the fashion index for the past five quarters.

Shoe trends and brands that were once considered ‘ugly’ have gone mainstream with a little help from some of the world’s best models.

And next, the padded shoes.

Consider sleeping bags or puffer jackets for your feet – comfy, right? No wonder supermodels Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner decided to try the trend for themselves during their vacation in snowy Aspen at the end of last year.

While strolling around Colorado ski town on New Year’s Eve, Bieber sported a black padded black boot version of the trend and styled the leather-look puffy boots with an oversized wool jacket with padded shoulders and micro canopies, both from Saint Laurent.

Straight from the catwalk, the model’s Loewe boots come in at £895, though several more affordable versions of the style are already available on the main street.

Not quite the same as a moonboot, the padded trend doesn’t differentiate between shoe styles that appear on sneakers and formal slip-on versions, either.

Bieber showed his love for the train again when he returned to Los Angeles just three days later and exchanged his books for a pair of padded Puma slip-on mules.
