DC Studios boss James Gunn stepped in to debunk an online rumor that Euphoria star Jacob Elordi has been cast as the new big-screen Superman.

After the announcement that Henry Cavill will no longer play the character, speculation has been swirling around the internet about the possible identity of cinema’s next Man of Steel.

Responding to a fan who shared some edited pictures of Elordi in his Superman costume, Gunn explained that “no one has been cast for the Superman role yet.”

He added: “The cast, as I almost always do, will be at or near the end of the script, and it won’t be over. We’ll reveal a few things in a not too long time, but the Superman cast won’t be one of them.”

Cavill announced his return to the role of Superman in October after an incarnation of the character was revealed in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, where he appeared for the first time since Justice League in 2017.

However, this Superman revival is disrupted when Gunn and vice president Peter Safran take the reins of DC Studios and begin to clean up the past.

Gunn is currently working on the script for his own Superman movie, which will focus on a younger version of the character than the Kal-El version of Cavill.

Elordi, 25, was tipped off for the role thanks to her work on the vibrant teen show Euphoria and the Netflix romantic comedy series The Kissing Booth.

Gunn and Safran are said to be planning a 10-year strategy for the future of DC Studios, which has struggled for direction since Justice League’s box office disappointment.

The studio had high hopes for Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, but it fell below $400m (£327m) at the global box office and could mean as much as $100m (£82m) loss for DC. Warner Bros.
