Netflix is ​​supporting Welsh TV by announcing its first Welsh-language series on its streaming service.

Starting in April, subscribers will be able to stream Dal y Mellt, a gritty detective thriller about a group of misfits who team up to commit a heist.

Based on a novel written by Iwan ‘Iwcs’ Roberts, Dal y Mellt and translated in English as Catch The Lightning, the film was originally made and released by public service broadcaster S4C, but is coming to Netflix in April and will also be available with English subtitles. .

Benjamin King, Netflix’s director of public policy for the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, announced the news at the Welsh Affairs Committee evidence session Wednesday.

“In fact, I’m delighted to share with the committee this morning that we’ll be announcing soon that we’ve licensed a great Welsh-language show – Dal y Mellt – that aired on S4C last year from S4C and is coming to Netflix in April.”

King added: “The UK is one of the most important markets for Netflix, especially in terms of our investment in production and content.

“We spend over a billion dollars each year on UK-made content here. But I think within the UK, Wales has consistently been the place for many of our best-known and most-loved programmes.

Welsh shows Hinterland and Keeping Faith are available on Netflix, but only aired in English versions, so this will be the first time the service will be streaming a Welsh show.

It streams content in languages ​​other than English, such as South Korea’s Squid Game, Spain’s Money Heist, and various Criminal series in French, German, and Spanish.

Welsh subtitles are also available for some movies streamed on Netflix.
