Netflix’s All Quiet On The Western Front tops its 2023 Bafta nominations

Netflix’s anti-war epic All Quiet On The Western Front is leading this year’s BAFTA film awards with 14 nominations.

Directed by German filmmaker Edward Berger and based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel of the same name, the film was nominated for best gong, including best picture, best director, and best non-English film.

The series of nominations means it’s equal to 2000’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as the most nominated non-English film in Bafta history.

Oscar winner Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees Of Inisherin and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All At Once followed closely with ten nominations.

Both films were nominated for best picture, and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Todd Field’s Tar rounded out the five-man list.

The Banshees Of Inisherin earned Irish actor Colin Farrell his first BAFTA nomination in the lead actor category for his role in the black comedy-drama with Brendan Gleeson.

Set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, Farrell’s character is devastated when his friend, played by Gleeson, ends their lifelong friendship.

Other nominations include best director, best original screenplay, and best supporting actor for Irish star Gleeson.

But Farrell will face fierce competition for the lead actor award as the category includes Austin Butler for Elvis, Brendan Fraser for The Whale, Paul Mescal for Aftersun, Bill Nighy for Living, and Daryl McCormack for Good Luck to You, Leo. grand

The title award will also be contested, as nominations include Tar with Cate Blanchett, The Woman King with Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh with Everything Everywhere All At Once, Dame Emma Thompson, Leo Grande and Ana de Armas for Good Luck to You. Blonde and Danielle Deadwyler for Till.

The quirky sci-fi thriller Everything Everywhere All At Once is nominated for best director and best original screenplay.

Alongside Yeoh, other members of the star-studded cast were also nominated; Jamie Lee Curtis was nominated as a supporting actress and Ke Huy Quan was nominated as a supporting actor.

Luhrmann’s biography of Elvis Presley, played by Butler, is featured in nine categories, and Tar, where Blanchett plays as the fictional, complex genius conductor of a German orchestra, received five endorsements.

Aftersun, The Batman, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, Top Gun: Maverick and The Whale received four nominations, respectively.

On Tuesday, Sex Education’s Emma Mackey and Aimee Lou Wood, Naomi Ackie, who recently played Whitney Houston in Sony’s biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, The Woman King’s Sheila Atim and Good Luck to You, Leo It was announced that McCormack from Grande had all been selected. Nominated for the EE Rising Star Award.

Lashana Lynch, Bukky Bakray, John Boyega, James McAvoy, Kristen Stewart and Tom Hardy are among the previous winners in this category, which is the only category in the BAFTA film awards voted by the public.

Actors Hayley Atwell and Toheeb Jimoh announced the nominations live from Bafta 195 Piccadilly in London.

The 2023 Bafta ceremony will be held at the Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre, and will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 19 February.
