Tire Nichols – live: Family says body camera video shows Memphis police beating him like Rodney King before he died

The family of Tire Nichols, a Memphis man who died days after he was arrested and beaten by police in the city, spoke after watching the footage of the incident.

Nichols, 29, died on January 10, three days after a traffic stop turned into a clash with police officers, resulting in him in the hospital.

Family members and their lawyers met with Memphis police and viewed the video footage Monday before it was made public.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump described the video as “horrible, disgusting, violent and troublesome.”

“We’re seeing evidence of what happens to black and brown people from simple traffic stops,” Mr Crump said. “You shouldn’t die from a simple traffic stop.”

“Unfortunately, it reminded us of the Rodney King video,” Crump said.

Lawyer Antonio Romanucci described Nichols as “a human piñata” for being beaten. Five officers, all black, were fired from the department following the incident.
