Given the turmoil of recent years, some anticipated stars may approach the Golden Globes with sartorial shyness. And yet, despite the rainy conditions, Hollywood’s big and good are back on the event’s gray carpet with levels of pre-pandemic high-octane glamor.
The ceremony typically pioneers not only who will win the Oscar in March, but also fashion trends we can expect to see throughout awards season. And if last night is anything to go by, dramatic silhouettes, shimmering pastel pinks and monochromatic tuxedos are ready to win big in 2023.
Among the best dressed were Pam and Tommy star Lily James, who sported a striking figure in a voluminous red taffeta Versace dress that echoed the shade of Pamela Anderson’s famous swimsuit. It was actually so bulky that James had to travel to the event standing upright in a van. Also joining the drama was Rihanna in a custom black velvet Schiaparelli dress and Selena Gomez, who joined her 9-year-old sister in a Valentino Couture dress with wide eggplant puff sleeves.
Sequins were the shortcut to the old-school Hollywood starlet for glamorous White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge in a black Dolce & Gabbana maxi and Black Panther’s Angela Bassett, who opted for a silver halterneck dress by American nightwear brand Pamela Rolland. Best Actress Award winner Michelle Yeoh shone in a midnight blue strapless Armani Privé crystal sequin dress while also taking home gongs.

Pastel pinks became popular, with Salma Hayek Pinault and Michelle Williams at Gucci, Claire Danes and Oscar de la Renta at Giambattista Valli, and Jessica Chastain at Gucci jewelry. Three-time Golden Globe nominee Margot Robbie hit sugary perfection in a Chantilly lace and silk custom Chanel dress, putting an end to TikTok rumors she’s breaking ties as the brand’s ambassador. The French label said the Barbiecore look took 750 hours to complete and included 30,000 hand-embroidered beads, feathers and sequins.
Other notable looks came from Laverne Cox, who wowed with vintage John Galliano, and Black Panther star Letitia Wright, who looked effortlessly chic in a burnt orange dip dyed silk maxi dress from Prada’s Spring 2023 collection.
Also adopting a more minimalist aesthetic, Dior ambassadors Elizabeth Debicki and Anya Taylor-Joy both sported vibrant pop satin looks rocking the French house – The Crown star Debiki’s look, a fuchsia strapless column dress, and Taylor-Joy’s lemon shorts and maxi dress skirt.
Men were more experimental than ever. Eddie Redmayne, who attended with his wife Hannah, was rocking a black Valentino tuxedo with a large silk floral appliqué on the collar; Reece Feldman opted for a pleated skirt over pants, while TikTok star Josh Richards wore a cropped tee underneath his pinstripe suit. Others are saying goodbye to boring black tuxedos: Former Spider-Man Andrew Garfield came in a caramel-hued Zegna, Seth Rogen came in head-to-toe Dior salmon, and Billy Porter, the loudest of them all, gave the nod to the famous 2019 Oscars outfit with vibrant magenta Christian.
